The Kenya School Meals Programme(SMP) Clean Energy Technical Working Group(TWG) Workshop

The Verst Carbon team was honored to co-faciltate the School Meals Program (SMP) Clean Energy Technical Working Group (TWG) Workshop, organized by GIZ Kenya in collaboration with the NATIONAL COUNCIL FOR NOMADIC EDUCATION IN KENYA (NACONEK) and The Rockefeller Foundation . The event brought together key stakeholders to accelerate the transition from biomass to clean energy solutions in schools.

Aligned with NACONEK’s goal of developing a carbon-neutral strategy for Kenya’s School Meals Program, the workshop focused on improving access to cleaner cooking methods while aiming to increase student enrollment from 2.6 million to 10 million learners by 2030.

𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬:

𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝟏: We set the stage by discussing the critical impact of climate change and the importance of transitioning schools from biomass to clean energy. The role of carbon market projects in driving this transformation was a key point of conversation.

𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝟐: Verst Carbon led a capacity-building session on developing carbon projects, breaking down the science of climate change, key terminologies, and the carbon market ecosystem. We explored the full project cycle, highlighting various project types that could be deployed. We also had insightful presentations from stakeholders like @Faith Energy Savings, Feion Green Ventures, Ecobora, and Sun Buckets , who showcased innovative clean cooking technologies designed to reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency. Technical working groups were formed to address key areas such as Finance, Technology, and Policy.

𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝟑: The workshop concluded with sub-committee presentations outlining action plans and strategies to ensure the success of this transformative project. To cap it all off, we hosted a fun quiz that tested participants’ knowledge of carbon markets—an engaging way to end a productive three days. Congratulations to Beryl Onjala for emerging as the winner!
