BACKGROUND OVERVIEW
Kenya faces a growing challenge of agricultural waste buildup – for example, rice husks and avocado residues – which leads to soil degradation, water pollution, and uncontrolled greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Farmers often dispose of crop residues by open burning or leaving them to rot, practices that release large amounts of carbon dioxide (CO₂) and methane (CH₄), worsening climate change and harming soil fertility. The Pure Plant Organics Biochar Project is a Kenya-based initiative designed to address these challenges by converting agricultural waste into biochar, a stable, carbon-rich charcoal-like material used to improve soil. This climate-smart project creates a circular economy solution that turns farm waste into a valuable soil enhancer, mitigates climate change by storing carbon, and boosts agricultural productivity for local communities.
